"In 1989 I spent 2 weeks in San'a North Yemen, staying with a friend who was working with the ILO, on a project reviving old textile skills. It was an extraordinary experience meeting Yemeni women who were either totally covered or just had their eyes exposed... it was difficult to make contact with them - seeing but not seeing. My friend worked with a group of women for 2 years, it was only in her last week before she left that the women had a party for her and removed their 'abayas' on this occasion. This was the first time that she had seen their faces.
"After I came home I made the first of two books that I called Veiling Book—the pages are glued together to secure a blurred print of a veiled woman on muslin. Before gluing the pages were stitched into a concertina spine. "Gesso and shellac were used on the surface of the paper and some found paper and silkscreen material were used on the last page. "A second Veiling Book—Veiling Book ll—was made using fly wire pockets stitched together to house collaged photocopied pages—the material relating to the lack of clarity, seeing but not seeing, reinforcing the feeling of inaccessibility."
