Six Issues of Ern Malley's Journal were published between 1952-1955.
In this issue Vol. 1 No. 2, March 1953, in the article 'George Williams — Primitive Painter and Writer', Max Harris writes: "Nothing illustrates Australia's lack of aesthetic maturity more strikingly that the resistance that is put up to any serious appreciation of primitive painting. The explanation is to be found at the simplest and most self-evident level. The artist in Australia is a highly self-conscious, thwarted, opiniated being, who tries to make a go of it in our small communities which do not acknowledge any concepts of elites, social or artistic."
