"'Abecedario' is a 29 volume set of the alphabet in Spanish (with the letters CH, LL and Ñ). It was a subscription book with a new book each week over the course of late 2000 - early 2001. Each letter had its own theme and a number of them were political. At the time in Puerto Rico the battle over the US naval base in Vieques was in full swing and can be seen in the letter V (each word being Vieques), the letter F (Fuera Marina de Vieques - Navy Out of Vieques) and the letter K includes Kayak (the name of an environmental activist). The letter I is a collection of obscure and not so obscure insults illustrated with a portrait of George Bush. H is composed of Hoguera/Hoz/Huelga (Bonfire/Sickle/Strike). M is a Posadaesque mini-story set at the Capitol building (Manicomio/Mentirosas/Milagro -Asylum/Liars/Miracle)." Dave Buchan |
