"Many of you may know that the Editor of 'Umbrella' has allowed you to look over her shoulder as she reads magazines and newspapers, exhibition catalogs and artists' books, and as she has traveled around the world. She has never forgotten her umbrella wherever she goes, but several of you have done so (sic). The support for 'Umbrella' comes from subscriptions. It is largely due to the institutions that have supported 'Umbrella' over the years that the magazine has survived. But now, the individual subscribers have found it difficult to renew their subscriptions... We are undergoing a crisis, and in fact, 'Umbrella' will have to decide this summer whether to continue publishing or not..." Judith Hoffberg, From the Editor, May 1983
