"The West tends to privilege Russian art that is either about the Revolution, or other forms of social struggle. As a result work that is more ambiguous, concerned with identity, or mythology is overlooked. Contemporary Russian poet Galina Ermoshina is one such writer. [Her] experimental narratives are unknown in the West... "In a short self-reflexive essay "In the Margins of Image and Text" Ermoshina describes the experience of writing where both writers and readers generate meanings. "These ideas form the point of departure for this book. I developed a series of drawings from tree diagrams and matched fragments of Ermoshina's text with them. Uncoupled words become signs indicating directions, and pages figures of translation." Mark Wingrave (from the afterword) |
