"The first draft of 'The Cure' was written shortly after completing the editing of 'The Diaries of Dorothea Mackellar' with Angus & Robertson. With an intense period of work at an end, notwithstanding many satisfactions, there were two emotions to resolve. Firstly, I had a tremendous urge to bid Dorothea and her world good-bye—a genteel, repressive place, peopled with intelligent, sensitive women, who nonetheless accepted unquestioningly the passive role, even when, as in Dorothea's case, it led to nerve breakdowns and alcoholism. Secondly, remaining amicable during the commercial editing process, whereby my work was diluted and sweetened for mass consumption, had left its mark. Then I read that, according to commercial wisdom, women's fiction should not deal with either madness or cancer. That it did. Writing 'The Cure' was fun. The sonata form of the piece and the musical cadence of the language felt natural." Jyoti Brunsdon |
