| "The formation of this collection of artists' books, of which this is a sampling, began in 1953 when Robert Ruben, never having o much as heard the phrase 'artists' book', was drawn to purchase, for 2 guilders (reduced from 4.50) Robert Ziller's 1946 'Wij maken Geschiedenis' (We Make History). The graphics were dramatic, but even more compelling were the illustrations, which instead of serving the text as one expected, did something new: they challenged the text."
