They produce, with few surprises, what they are told, and we call them hacks, short for Hackney, the borough of London formerly known for raising docile, obedient horses who went, with few surprises, where they were told. Real printers, like real horses, have minds of their own and are far safer to watch than to harness or ride. Real printers are full of surprises too, because they are genuine makers who show more care for the object they are making, and the meaning of the object, than they do for the money it will bring.
