These woodblocks were cut by locals in French East Africa. A label inserted in front of the title page: "Les textes et illustrations de cette ouvrage ont été réalisés au couteau, sur bois, par les indiènes de l'A.E.F."
In the note to the reader the author/artist, Bela, states that what follows is a fable in the style of La Fontaine. The fable told is the 'Story of the Monkey and the Panther'. There is a reference to Gutenberg in the title, although misspelled Gutemberg, yet it is ironic because Gutenberg's great invention, moveable type was not used in the production of this work. Cutting full pages/blocks of text was pre-Gutenberg 'technology'. |
